Designed in 1911 as the New Princess Theatre by Bertie Crew, it was renamed the Shaftesbury Theatre in 1963. It was forced to close just prior to the 2,000th performance of the world-famous hippy musical, Hair, when, in 1973, when part of the roof fell in. It re-opened in 1975 with a production of West Side Story. With a handsome exterior, its facade dominates the whole corner of the Shaftesbury Avenue and Bloomsbury Street.
