Listen up children.
In a deep dark wood, Jack, Cinderella, Rapunzel, the baker, and his wife and Little Red Riding hood are about to find out that dreams do come true… they just don’t come free.
Jack wants to keep his cow. The Bakers want a child, Cinderella wants romance and Red just wants pies and lots of them. So should they be allowed their wishes? Well of course! Everyone should get what their hearts desire: they just should not be surprised at the cost they will have to pay.
Of course there is the film, but the stage version is better. Call me biased but this is Stephen Sondheim’s best ever musical. Better than Sunday, better than Company, Sweeney, Night Music. Of course it’s not better than West Side Story, but Sondheim just made up the lyrics for that: Bernstein and Shakespeare did the rest.
There is precision in the Woods. There is a process, a journey. Obviously there is a shared experience that is not so much present in other shows, but there is also a demonstration of the understanding of the dangers of a self indulgence which other Sondheim musicals seem to revel in rather than expose. And I like that better!
But most of all there are stand out songs, comedy, pathos and tenderness.

Into The Woods FAQs
Why do you think Into The Woods is Stephen Sondheim’s best show?
Because a long time ago, I was in it. :-) But joking aside, I think it is really important to know a Sondheim show before you see it, and that helped me get to know it and understand it to it’s fullest. Also it was nominated for 11 Oliviers!
Oh Really? What did you play? I was Jack.
Why should I see this production of the show?
It is directed by Jordan Fein who is also associate director for Cabaret at the Kit Kat Club in London. It’s also designed by Tom Scutt who won awards for his designs for Cabaret, so yes: big fan.
When can I book for Into The Woods?
Into The Woods has just announced the move to The Noel Coward Theatre. Performances are scheduled for evening shows at 19:30 Monday to Saturday and matinees at 14:30 on Thursdays and Saturdays. The show is about 2 hours 40 minutes (with interval), but it will seem shorter. The only down side is that now it has been nominated for so many awards, everyone will want to see it so I would hurry if you want decent seats.
Where is Into the Woods moving to?
The Noel Coward Theatre, 85-88 St Martin’s Lane, London WC2N 4AU
What hotel would you recommend for a Into The Woods ticket and hotel package?
Anything in Covent Garden will be close by, but the tube is also close so you can get anywhere really easily.
