A Christmas Carol

Christmas would not be Christmas without a production of A Christmas Carol.  This year we have two – and both of them like a breath of chill air on a winter’s night!

The multi-talented Mark Gatiss has adapted the Dickens classic and it stars Neil Morrissey and Matthew Cottle.  A Christmas Carol – A Ghost Story runs at the equally spooky Alexandra Palace Theatre with accommodation at the nearby Best Western London Highbury Hotel.

This year however we will  also be getting a very different Christmas Carol served up by Mischief. The Cornley Amateur Drama Society are back with tidings of chaos and joy, ready to tackle the Charles Dickens’ classic in Christmas Carol Goes Wrong. An hilarious festive treat! Hilarious!

London Pantos

Jack and the Beanstalk

Watch out for a great show at Islington’s Kings Head Theatre when they give us Jack and The Beanstalk this year. But watch out, there is a family version and an adult version: DONT GET THEM MIXED UP!

Ballet

The Nutcracker

When Clara is given a Nutcracker on Christmas Eve, she awakes later to discover a magical world of strange and wonderful characters.

There are three productions of The Nutcracker on in London in 2025. One at the London Coliseum, one at the Royal Opera House and one at the one and only Royal Albert Hall.

Theatre Breaks have ticket and hotel packages available for the Royal Albert Hall where Birmingham Royal Ballet’s enchanting production of The Nutcracker provides a festive treat for the whole family at the end of December.

Son of a nutcracker, Elf The Musical is heading back to the West End! Following a record-breaking season on Broadway last year, “the ultimate Christmas show” (Smooth FM) returns to spread festive cheer for 10 weeks only from 28 October 2025 to 4 January 2026.

Christmas in The West End

Oliver!

There is also a new production of Lionel Bart’s  Oliver! Cameron Mackintosh’s new production of Lionel Bart’s iconic musical, Oliver!, which he has fully reconceived with director and choreographer Matthew Bourne, opened in London at the Gielgud Theatre last year and continues to wow the crowds. But be warned – you’ll have to pick a pocket or two to get  tickets over the Christmas period – maybe book this one  soon.

Matilda is the Roald Dahl story made into the smash hit West End musical by Australian comedian Tim Minchin. A young girl is sent to the awful  Cruncham Hall, run by the even more awful Miss Trunchbull. Here she turns against the system and tries to lead the kids out from under the heel of their hated head teacher and learns that she has some very special powers in the process. This is one of my family’s favourite West End shows: perfect at any time of year.

It wouldn’t be a London Christmas Breaks without…

Of course in addition to what is on and the events that take place, London itself  takes on a festive sparkle with the famous street lights and even some special shopping days on Regent Street, Carnaby Street and Covent Garden throughout December and on the lead-up to Christmas. So make sure you include plenty of spare time on your Christmas break.

London Hotels at Christmas

Special Offers on Accommodation – As the schools break up for Christmas, business meetings also stop for London hotels as companies relax for the New Year. In fact it is not until mid February do things really get going in Business Travel World.  This means many hotels are keen for some additional business, which means Theatre Breaks receives some great deals: compare December and January prices with those in November and you will see what I mean.

So what ever you are planning, do consider one of our  Christmas theatre Breaks in London.

Merry Christmas!
