5/11/2012 The Audience – a new play

Hi Theatre-goers

Hope you all had a good weekend – did you go a firework display? We did and as always it was spectacular, then afterwards we always go for a meze at a local Greek/Turkish restaurant.

Looks like a great cast line-up for Peter Morgan’s latest play, The Audience, which will go into the Gielgud theatre in February 2013 once Chariots of Fire has vacated it.  Actress Haydn Gwynne has just been confirmed to play the part of Margaret Thatcher opposite Helen Mirren’s Elizabeth II in a new drama that explores the weekly meetings between the PM and the Queen, held throughout the her 60 year reign – the content of which is known only to those two people … until now!

Gwynne and Mirren are joined by Robert Hardy and Paul Ritter, who will play Winston Churchill and John Major respectively.

Hardy will feel quite at home playing Churchill, having played the role taken seven times in the past. To many of us who have reached a certain age (!) he will be best known for his role as Siegfriend Farnon in 1980s TV classic All Creatures Great And Small.

The Audience will run at London’s Gielgud theatre from 15 February to 15 June, Full casting is yet to be announced, so there is plenty of time to guess who might play the other Prime Ministers, including Tony Blair, Gordon Brown and David Cameron. Who do you fancy in those roles?

Have a great Monday everyone!
