Trainspotting and Hotel Packages by Theatre Breaks
Theatre Breaks for Trainspotting were only booking for three months over this summer. Did you see Irvine Welsh musical version of his book, the one that Danny Boyle made into a cult classic in the 90’s? Did you choose Life!?

There are some shows that sound so outrageous you instantly want to know whether they’ll be a disaster or a work of genius. Trainspotting The Musical firmly falls into that category — and that is exactly why Theatre Breaks is already obsessed with it.
Unfortunately…
Opening at the Theatre Royal Haymarket (now that’s a thing from the start) from 15 July to 5 September 2026, this brand-new stage adaptation of Irvine Welsh’s cult classic arrived in the West End thirty years after Danny Boyle’s film changed British cinema forever. But somehow, against all the efforts of those on stage, turning Trainspotting into a musical didn’t really work.
The biggest reason for the excitement was that Welsh himself was behind it. Rather than handing the material over to someone else, the original author has written the book for the show alongside new music and lyrics with Stephen McGuinness. That immediately gave the project credibility because Trainspotting is not a story audiences would forgive getting wrong. Its mixture of pitch-black comedy, addiction, rage and friendship still feels dangerous decades later. But the critics didn’t think so.
Director Caroline Jay Ranger seemed determined to avoid making this feel like a nostalgic karaoke version of the film. Early details suggested the production combined original songs with music inspired by the iconic soundtrack that helped define the 1990s. Audiences were doubtful about how the show could recreate the anarchic energy of the film’s club scenes, emotional meltdowns and infamous toilet sequence on stage.
Casting added another layer of intrigue. Scottish actor Robbie Scott making his West End debut as Renton, taking on one of the most recognisable roles in modern British pop culture. Around him was a cast packed with rising Scottish talent, which helped preserve the story’s raw authenticity rather than smoothing it into something overly polished.
What made the whole thing genuinely exciting, was the sense that nobody entirely knows what it will be. Musicals are rarely this risky anymore. Some theatre fans online were convinced it could become a cult sensation; others thought it sounded completely unhinged.
Unfortunately…
Trainspotting The Musical failed to capture even half the chaos, humour and emotional punch of the original story, London could have had one of the most talked-about theatrical events of 2026 on its hands. Well I suppose it did!
