Troy Maxson was once a gifted athlete but was denied his shot at the big time and now struggles through daily life in Pittsburgh. Resentful of a world he believes has denied him chances at every turn, he takes out his anger on his loyal wife and sports-obsessed son.

Fences is one of the great American dramas of the 20th century, and winner of the New York Drama Critics’ Award, two Tony Awards and the Pulitzer Prize for Drama. Set between the Korean and Vietnam wars, it is the story of a family trying to hold itself together and of what happens when a strong man is robbed of his dreams – a universal story which will touch a chord in every heart.

Joining Lennie Henry as Troy in Fences will be Tanya Moodie, Colin McFarlane (Batman Begins, The Dark Knight & Torchwood), Peter Bankolé and Ashley Zhangazha

It is directed by Paulette Randall who was Associate Director of the 2012 London Olympics Opening Ceremony as well as being former Artistic Director of the Talawa Theatre Company.

Fences is currently booking from 26th June to 14th September 2013.

Fences and Hotels in London

The Duchess theatre is located in Catherine Street which is runs in between Russell Street and The Aldwych. The closest underground is Covent Garden on the Piccadilly Line. As Covent Garden station is built very deep, there are lifts up to street level which can get a little busy at peak times. Allow yourself a good 15 minutes from alighting from the tube to walking to the theatre.

For a budget Fences theatre break in London you can stay at the conveniently located 3 star Travelodge Covent Garden which offers room only and B&B options, or at the 3 star St Giles hotel situated on the north side of Oxford Street with the added benefit of an indoor pool. At the higher end, there is the 5 star Savoy and 4 star Strand Palace hotels both on The Strand and within a short walking distance of the Duchess theatre.

However, when narrowing down the list of hotels set the ‘Distance’ filter to 2 miles and wherever you chose will be easy to get back to after the show.
