Long Day’s Journey Into Night – The Play
This compelling family drama, written by Eugene O’Neil features the Tyrone family. James Tyrone (Suchet) is a once succesful but disillusioned actor. His wife Mary Tyrone (Metcalf) has recently returned to the family after a treatment for Morphine addiction. Their two sons, failures and alcoholics!
Set during a long summer’s day, Long Day’s Journey into Night sees the family members constantly at war with each other: old wounds are opened and old arguments revisited.
Rather shockingly, this is a semi-autobiographical piece based on O’Neill’s own home life and family; probably a clue as to how and why this play was so well written making it one of the 20th century’s masterpieces.
David Suchet
David Suchet CBE is best known for his portrayal of Agatha Christie’s Belgian detective Hercule Poirot in the TV series Poirot.
Suchet received a Tony Award nomination for the 1999 Broadway revival of Amadeus. His London stage credits include Oleanna, the aforementioned All My Sons and The Last Confession in which Suchet brought his crime fighting expertise to the stage as Benelli: a cardinal turned investigator at the death of Pope John Paul I in 1978.
Laurie Metcalf
American actress Laurie Metcalf, began her career in theatre at the Steppenwolf Theatre Company but is best known for her role as Jackie Harris in the hit comedy series Roseanne.
Coincidentally, like Suchet, she last performed in London in when she made her British stage debut with All My Sons although that was the 2001 production at the National Theatre.
