Gypsy in London

Theatre Breaks for Gypsy are no longer available to book. See what’s on next at the Savoy theatre

The prestigious Savoy Theatre will play host to a strictly limited season of Jonathan Kent’s “dazzling revival” (Mail on Sunday) of the gloriously entertaining musical Gypsy, that features “showstopping” (Mail on Sunday) choreography from Stephen Mear.

Following its sell-out, rapturously acclaimed five-star run at the Chichester Festival Theatre, Imelda Staunton delivers a “knock-out performance” (The Independent) as Momma Rose, the legendary burlesque entertainer Gypsy Rose Lee, as she and her two daughters, Baby June and Louise, trek across America in their family vaudeville act.

But times are changing, audiences are expecting more, and the two girls have their own ambitions in mind. The rise of burlesque is upon them, and nothing will ever be the same again for Momma Rose.

Appearing alongside Staunton is Lara Pulver (BBC’s Spooks & Sherlock), who reprises her “stunning” (The Independent) role as Louise and Peter Davison (BBC’s Dr Who & more recently on stage as King Arthur in Monty Python’s Spamalot) as Herb.

With lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, book by Arthur Laurents and music by Jule Styne, this moving and “scintillating” (The Times) production of Gypsy is the first to be seen in London for 40 years.
