Cyrano de Bergerac

cyrano de bergerac theatre breaks starring Adrian Lester

Cyrano de Bergerac and Hotel Packages

Theatre Breaks guests are about to fall in love with Cyrano de Bergerac all over again. After a sold-out and critically adored run in Stratford-upon-Avon, the Royal Shakespeare Company’s five-star production, starring Adrian Lester, transfers to the Noël Coward Theatre for a strictly limited West End summer season: I love London in the summer!

Fiercely funny and intensely romantic, Cyrano lives by his words and his sword. Haunted by doubts about his own his appearance, he watched from the shadows as Roxane falls for another man. Handsome but hopeless with words, Christian turns to the one person who can help.

Who’s in in Cyrano de Bergerac?

The biggest draw is undoubtedly Adrian Lester in the title role. Lester has long been one of Britain’s most magnetic stage actors, but critics were practically unanimous in their praise for his Cyrano, describing the performance as witty, heartbreaking and deeply human. This is not a distant literary hero trapped behind period formality; Lester apparently turns Cyrano into someone thrillingly alive, full of swagger, vulnerability and emotional chaos.

Opposite him, Susannah Fielding reprises her acclaimed performance as Roxane, bringing intelligence and warmth to a character who can often feel underwritten in lesser productions. Their chemistry was repeatedly singled out during the Stratford run, helping transform the play from a dusty classic into something immediate and emotionally devastating.

Part of the excitement surrounding this transfer comes from the adaptation itself. Director Simon Evans has co-written a fresh version of Edmond Rostand’s text with poet and playwright Debris Stevenson, blending lyrical language with modern emotional clarity. Reviews from the original run praised the production for feeling playful and contemporary without losing the romance, swordplay and aching sadness that make Cyrano such an enduring classic.

The Noël Coward Theatre also feels like the perfect home for it. There is something wonderfully fitting about this grand, intimate West End venue hosting a story driven by hidden longing, theatricality and enormous emotion. With its relatively limited run and glowing word-of-mouth already spreading through theatre circles online, demand is expected to be intense. Reddit theatre communities have already begun calling the transfer “really deserving” and “brilliant” following its Stratford success.

IMPORTANT. This is the RSC version of the play, directed by Simon Evans and co-adapted with Debris Stevenson and NOT the version adapted by Martin Crimp starring James McEvoy. That was last year!!!
