Voila! Theatre Festival 2026

Voila! Theatre Festival returns to London this November

More than 250 languages are spoken in London, yet you will hear only a handful of them on its stages. For three weeks this November, Voila! Theatre Festival sets out to put that right. From 2 to 22 November 2026, 450 artists bring 101 shows and events in 60 languages to eight fringe theatres across the capital. The Stage calls it “an essential festival”. I’m only sorry this press release is in one language!

From one theatre to eight

Voila! began more than a decade ago as a showcase for French-language work at The Cockpit in Marylebone, which still produces it and remains its home. In 2024, with Arts Council England behind it, the festival spread across the city, and last year it sold more tickets than ever before. This year’s venues are The Cockpit, Barons Court Theatre, Canal Cafe Theatre, Etcetera Theatre, The Playground Theatre, Theatro Technis, The Space and Upstairs at the Gatehouse, all small, friendly rooms where new artists often take their first steps.

Don’t let the languages put you off. More than half the programme is performed in English alongside at least one other language, and shows that are not in English carry subtitles or surtitles. The organisers describe the festival as panlingual: languages meeting and mixing on stage, much as they do on any London bus.

What to look out for

The one I would go out of my way for is The Gummy Bears’ Great War at the Etcetera, from the Italian company Batisfera. It is played out on a tabletop with real sweets and tiny lights, in front of only a few people at a time, and it picked up four-star reviews from both The Stage and The Telegraph at the 2025 Edinburgh Fringe.

At The Cockpit, The Radical Wedding Engine by the collective Ensemble not Found is half wedding, half performance, with treats handed round, while Legend of Kaliakra retells the Bulgarian story of forty maidens who chose death over slavery, in Bulgarian with English surtitles. Taiwan’s Sun Son Theatre brings Lament of the Wandering Head to Barons Court, turning a Southeast Asian myth into a story of displacement, with live music in Penang Hokkien and Mandarin.

Elsewhere, Heaven to Earth Plus at The Space tells a Ukrainian soldier’s own story through music, poetry and folk song; Much Crazy About Nothing at The Playground imagines a world of professional break-up agents; and Upstairs at the Gatehouse has Basilitrix, a Polish folk rock musical for families.

Planning your break

The easiest way in is Pick of Voila! at The Cockpit on Monday 2 November, the opening-night taster of short extracts, each followed by a chat with the artists and a drink in the bar.

The venues are spread out, from Little Venice and Highgate to the Isle of Dogs, so choose your hotel with your shows in mind. Marylebone and Bloomsbury are good central bases for The Cockpit, Canal Cafe Theatre and Theatro Technis. Add a West End show on the second night: the big musical and the small, surprising room make a fine November pairing. If your dates are flexible, go midweek, when discounted rail is available on most packages.
