Designed in 1930 by W Lewis, the Apollo Victoria Theatre originally opened as a cinema! It first became a theatre in 1979, staging both musicals and concerts (including performances by Shirley Bassey, Cliff Richard and Sammy Davis Jnr). Then in 1981, its auditorium was radically reworked to accommodate the skate-tracks and melodies of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s “Starlight Express” and it has never looked back since although it closed briefly to allow for further renovation of both the theatre and the show.
