The Producers Theatre Breaks
The first major London revival of Mel Brooks’ musical adaptation of The Producers transferred to the Garrick Theatre this autumn and ran to 19 September following a sold-out run at the Menier Chocolate Factory.
Do you remember the first time you saw The Producers?
I do. It was late-ish and I was channel surfing and I suddenly came across a gay 60’s Nazi singing about European domination. I was quite young – early teens and I had seen Blazing Saddles, so as soon as I saw a gurning Brookes I understood the humour we were going to served up… but I had not heard about this earlier film. which I immediately fell in love with.
So this is the successful musical of the smash hit film about putting on a musical flop that… well that would be spoiling it – that is SO Mel Brookes!
Based on the classic cult film, the original Broadway production won a record twelve Tony Awards, and skewers Broadway traditions, taking no prisoners as it proudly proclaims itself an “equal opportunity offender!”
Critically acclaimed principals Marc Antolin, Trevor Ashley, Raj Ghatak, Andy Nyman, Harry Morrison and Joanna Woodward all returned triumphantly for the West End production.

- FACT: my mate Paul Farnsworth designed the costumes. He says that once you take into account the swings and understudies there is an insane number of cozies involved. He also says “a stitch in time saves nine”. He should know!
