One Flew Over The Cuckoos Nest

Ticket and Hotel Packages available in 2026

The Old Vic’s 2026 production of One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest is one of the most anticipated theatrical revivals of the year. Based on Ken Kesey’s influential 1962 novel and adapted for the stage by Dale Wasserman, this iconic story stars Aaron Pierre and Olivier Award winning (Hamilton) actor Giles Terera. Book Your Theatre Break today.

One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest is set inside a psychiatric facility where the deeply oppressed patients exist under the iron rule of the tyrannical Nurse Ratched. The arrival of Randle P. McMurphy, a charismatic gambler who feigns insanity to escape prison work duties, sparks a dramatic upheaval. McMurphy’s spirited defiance awakens hope and resistance in the other patients, especially the long-silent Chief Bromden, whose narration drives much of the story’s emotional weight. The play’s themes of individuality versus systemic control, and the cost of defiance in rigid institutions, remain as powerful today as when Kesey first wrote them.

This revival is directed  in the round by Clint Dyer, known for his dynamic and socially conscious theatre work, including Death of England and Othello. Dyer’s approach to Cuckoo’s Nest reframes the narrative for contemporary audiences, emphasising the novel’s countercultural critique not only of mental health institutions but also of broader systems of power and exclusion, such as colonialism and social marginalisation. His vision channels the story’s original spirit while making it resonate with new cultural conversations about authority and identity.

The production also boasts a distinguished cast including Aaron Pierre who stars as Randle P. McMurphy, bringing physicality and defiant charm to the role, while Giles Terera takes on the part of Dale Harding. Their performances anchor the ensemble: a complex array of characters navigating fear, hope, repression, and solidarity.

Running from 1 April to 23 May 2026, it is part of  artistic director Matthew Warchus’s final season at The Old Vic.

With bold staging, a powerful cast, and a director deeply attuned to the play’s core tensions, this production aims to both honour Kesey’s original work and frame its urgent themes for a contemporary stage audience.
