Moulin Rouge! The Musical: theatre breaks at the Piccadilly Theatre

Few West End shows announce themselves the way Moulin Rouge! does. Baz Luhrmann’s film became a Tony-winning Broadway musical, and since 2022 it has filled the Piccadilly Theatre, just off Piccadilly Circus, with red velvet, Parisian excess and a score built from decades of pop hits. It is one of the West End’s most popular breaks, and theatre and hotel packages are booking to 03 July 2027, with discounted rail available on most.

What’s it about?

Paris, 1899. Christian, a young writer with no money and plenty of ideals, finds himself in Montmartre among the artists and bohemians who gather at the Moulin Rouge. There he falls for Satine, the club’s star, who is being steered towards a wealthy Duke whose money could save the place. What follows is a love story played out against the debts, deals and rivalries of the most famous nightclub in Paris.

The fun is in the music. Rather than a conventional score, the show stitches together pop songs from across the last half-century, often several in a single number, so much of the evening is spent recognising a tune a few bars in. The audience feels part of the club from the moment it takes its seats, as the auditorium itself is dressed for the occasion.

The team behind it

Alex Timbers directs, with a book by John Logan, whose screen work includes Gladiator and Skyfall. Justin Levine supervised and arranged the music, which is where the mash-ups come from, and Sonya Tayeh’s choreography gives the club scenes their energy. The production won ten Tony Awards on Broadway, including Best Musical, before opening in London.

Planning your break

The Piccadilly Theatre sits in Denman Street, a couple of minutes’ walk from Piccadilly Circus, with Soho’s restaurants on one side and Regent Street on the other. That makes it one of the easiest theatres for a break: book a hotel in Theatreland or around Charing Cross and you can walk to the show and back. Evening performances are at 19:30, Monday to Saturday, with matinees on Wednesday and Saturday at 14:30. For the best value, go midweek: discounted rail is available on most packages, and midweek seats are usually cheaper than Saturdays.

Is Moulin Rouge! suitable for children?

The show is recommended for ages 12 and over, and children under 5 are not admitted. Younger children can go at a parent’s discretion, but the story and some of the staging are adult in tone, so it suits teenagers better than primary-age children.

What time does the evening show finish?

The show runs for about 2 hours 35 minutes including the interval, so a 19:30 performance finishes at around 22:05. That leaves time for a late supper in Soho before heading back to your hotel.

Where should we stay near the Piccadilly Theatre?

The theatre is just north of Piccadilly Circus, so anywhere in Theatreland or around Mayfair is a short walk. Hotels close by include the 4 star Montcalm Piccadilly Townhouse, the Thistle Piccadilly and Trafalgar Square hotels and the Hotel Indigo Leicester Square. For a quieter base, Bloomsbury and Kensington are both an easy Tube ride away.

How do we get there from the main London stations?

Piccadilly Circus is the nearest Tube station. From King’s Cross St Pancras, the Piccadilly line runs direct. From Paddington, Marylebone or Waterloo, take the Bakerloo line straight there. From Euston, take the Victoria line two stops to Oxford Circus, then walk down Regent Street or change to the Bakerloo line for one stop.
