Top Ten London Theatre Breaks

This week I am not sure whether it is the power of TV or the power of our Theatre Breaks News newsletters but straight in at number one goes Midnight Tango, starring Strictly Come Dancing professionals Vincent and Flavia! It doesn’t even open till January, but it is already proving to be popular and will probably sell out nearer the time.

As predicted Les Miserables crashed out of the top ten this week leaving The Lion King, Shrek and The Wizard of Oz to jostle for the family’s attention in 2nd 3rd and 4th. It is not that Les Mis is not popular – it is just not available!

Billy Elliot is still doing OK, but continuing its surge (last week it was surfing, now it’s surging!) up the leader board is Ghost – I think it is a combination of great reviews and that it really is a perfect replacement for Dirty Dancing which closed at the end of July – to be honest it’s a lot better too!

All feeling the Tango effect, summer sizzler Mamma Mia! and blockbusters Wicked and Jersey Boys all drop a place this week

Old favourite We Will Rock You appears in the top ten for the first time for a while. It has just celebrated its 10th year and has extended to beyond those Olympic games next year, but it will have to watch out… having enjoyed its status as the only rock musical in town for all that time it is now about to get some stiff competition from Rock Of Ages at the Shaftesbury Theatre – it opens on 31 August 2011 – Look out London, it’s gonna be great fun and will star Bill Bailey and Shayne Ward: checkout the video too!

Again no plays in the top 10 this week – although Pygmalion (starring Rupert Everett, Kara Tointon and Diana Rigg) and long runner The Woman in Black both came close to the list of popular theatre breaks in London!
