Half Term Theatre Breaks for Families
London’s West End
Matilda the Musical
Tim Minchin’s musical adaptation of Roald Dahl’s book Matilda has been a spectacular success since opening at the Cambridge theatre in 2011. Over the last five years, it has become the “must see” show for adults and children alike. Watch out the kids are REVOLTING!
Family favourite, Mary Poppins, is back with Bert along for te ride to make sure she Steps in Time on the way to a Supercalafragilisticexpialidocious theatre break for the whole family! Sounds precocious?
Disney’s The Lion King
The long running musical The Lion King at the Lyceum Theatre is also a show for both young and old. As well as the popular songs that are known across the world, the costumes and scenery are outstanding. But as London hotels recognise children up to the age of 16 so should we! However, it is probably not for the very young in that it is pretty long especially if you are thinking of going to an evening performance.
Wicked seems to be the perfect show for teenage girls – they go crazy for the characters and the plot – not to mention the awesome singing! Fortunately it is also a great show for Mum and Dad who have to come along cos it’s their credit card!
It is a clever behind-the-scenes story to The Wizard of Oz from the angle of the two young witches growing up together: the witches story, what made them “good” and “bad” and what choices they have to make along the way.
NOTE: Just because children love these shows please don’t think that grown-ups will not. We consider these to be best shows all-round family shows currently in the West End – and if you have read this far then surely you must trust us a little!
Half Term Breaks for Older Children
The Play That Goes Wrong at the Duchess Theatre
If your teenage child isn’t “into musicals” we can highly recommend the hilarious The Play That Goes Wrong.
Half Term Breaks – taking mum and dad
Of course your “family” heading to London next half term may not include children. If you are going with the in-laws or mum and dad then consider 9 to 5 the Musical, or Tina – The Tina Turner Musical – both great shows without a child in sight!
Another more sophisticated show is Come From Away, the story of a small Newfoundland community who rise to the challange of looking after 6000 international travelers when their planes get diverted to the local airport when the authorities close US air space following the attacks of 9/11. A stunning musical with original music and a fascinating story.
