When War Horse opened in London it claimed a whole host of awards, just this week it wiped the boards at the Tonys in the US and it is just about to be released as a film.

A truly remarkable story, adapted from, a novel by Michael Morpurgo, for stage by Nick Stafford, War Horseis told with the use of stage puppetry the like has never been seen before. But this is no puppet show. The “horses” come alive as you watch them interact with each other and the other actors on the stage, to make you believe they are real flesh and blood.
The tale itself is about a young lad’s journey to find his beloved horse after it is sold to the cavalry at the outbreak of World War One and the audience experience the journeys – the “extraordinary odyssey” – that both the lad and the horse make to lead to their reunion.
But it is the manner in which the story is told that makes this piece of theatre unmissable.

Hotels for War Horse Theatre Breaks
War Horse is on at the New London Theatre on Drury Lane. Nearest tube stations if you need to travel to the theatre are Covent Garden and Holborn on the Piccadilly London making Kensington and Earls Court hotels easily accessible if you don’t want to be right in the centre.
If however you want to stay in theatreland and walk to and from your hotel there is a wide range of options.
The Covent Garden Travelodge is closest to War Horse, just at the opposite end of Drury Lane to Covent Garden. It is a basic 3 star hotel and great if you just want somewhere to lay your head – a great location! Moving up the scale the 4 star Kingsway Hall Hotel is also just round the corner – head towards Covent Garden then take a left just before you get to Long Acre – this hotel is well worth looking out – nice restaurant too but it is usually pretty empty for pre-theatre dining.
Other hotels with a short walk include the Radisson Edwardian Mercer Street on Seven Dials which is an high-end 4 star hotel (and Seven Dials is a lovely little area – Matilda is at the Cambridge Theatre there). Alternatively you could head the other side of Covent Garden for the Strand Palace Hotel (half way between a three and a four star hotel) opposite the distinctly 5 star Savoy Hotel. The Waldorf is also nearby on the Aldwych.
Pre-Theatre Dining
Look out for he unique setting of Sarastro or the healthy eating of the Wild Food Cafe or Food For Thought. Jamie’s Italian (as in Jamie Oliver) is busy but worth a visit too.

Warhorse - Pure Magic
Took my teenage boys to see this. Read the book (it's only short) before we went. The way the horses have been made and the painstaking attention to detail in their mannerisms and movement is outstanding. I really don't think there'll be anything like it again. It's a good show for boys as there is no sloppy stuff. It is a war so it's very loud, would take nurofen before going again! Lovely story and we all took something different away from this show. Top class!
Montague Hotel and Warhorse

The Hotel Montague on the Gardens was excellent in every way and was perfect for us. The service was friendly and helpful from when the concierge took the suitcase out of the taxi when we arrived until he put it back when we departed. The room was compact but ideal for the time we spent there. It was also well fitted out. The staff we always helpful and very quick to do things.
The seats for War Horse were excellent right in the middle and about the correct distance from the stage. We really enjoyed the show.

Warhorse is gobsmacking!
I saw War Horse for a second time and this time took my children. We had just finished reading the book together, so they knew the premise of the story. My 10 year old absolutely loved it. My 12 year old doesn't hold with emotion, but secretly I think he thoroughly enjoyed it too!
I enjoyed it just as much second time around and actually more having read the book in between visits.
Can't wait for film to come out... looks like a tear jerker. Another 'Marley & Me' for all the family.
Word of warning... we went on a Tuesday evening and the performance starts at 7pm NOT 7.30pm (like all other evenings). We missed first 15 mins - bah humbug.

any news of the new film for Warhorse? Saw Warhorse stage version last weekend on a theatre break (stayed at the Kingsway Hall – lovely) and thought it was brilliant – not sure how the film version will stand up to the live version though.

Hi Dom, the film is out just after Christmas – 28 or 29 December something like that. It is not a film of the stage show but of the book so the amazing stage horses (puppets is just an inadequate description) are played by real horses! there is a trailer if you are interested – link from the trailer section of theatrebreakstv

Yes, it’s out in December. It looks like it’s more in keeping with the book ie. Emily (French girl) has a grandfather rather than a mother. You can ewatch trailers for in on t’internet. Enjoy xx
