Wicked, London’s spellbinding and spectacular smash hit musical, tells the incredible untold story of the legendary witches from L. Frank Baum’s classic The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, and explains why one came to be called ‘good’ and the other ‘wicked’.
Based on Gregory Maguire’s ‘outstanding novel‘ (The Independent), Wicked is an ‘eye-poppingly lavish show‘ (Sunday Express) which transports audiences to a fantasy world of wizardry, witchcraft, sorcery and spells, with Grammy® Award-winning music, Tony® Award-winning sets and costumes and stunning special effects.
Experience this unforgettable musical and discover that you’ve not been told the whole story about the land of Oz – book one of our Short Breaks in London to see Wicked.
Wicked is a great show for seeing where your money has been spent – special effects, a great cast, a proper band and amazing scenery and costumes. AND it’s a good story! The cast of Wicked changes just seem to make the production better and better and we are blessed with great seats on our allocation which mean you get a really great view. All-in-all, a brilliant highlight to any London Theatre Break.
The music is typical American, modern musical stuff: dazzling chorus numbers, massive power ballads, dramatic underscoring, but there is light and shade allowing the characters their quiet times of introspection on stage!
The conceit of course is that this story is all happening “off stage”, as it were, in “The Wizard of Oz”, so we get tantalizing glimpses of the other story as we follow this one: making the audience feel very clever and pleased with itself as we recognise the references – very much adding to the fun of the piece without dominating it too much.
On Monday 12 December 2011 Gina Beck and Matt Willis will join Wicked to star as Glinda and Fiyero.
Gina Beck (Glinda) has been playing ‘Christine Daaé’ in Andrew Lloyd Webber’s The Phantom of the Opera – she made her West End debut in 2006 as ‘Cosette’ in Les Misérables.
Matt Willis (Fiyero) was one third of Busted he then sealed his place in the the popularity stakes by winning the popular ITV show I’m A Celebrity…Get Me Out of Here! - the same year as Gina was making her West End debut!
Before Wicked his West End debut was as ‘Nick Hurley’ in Flashdance – “he was really good!” [SB]

The pick of the hotels is the excellent Rubens Hotel. This is a four star hotel which acts like a five star hotel, rather than a four star hotel that pretends to be a five star hotel. Consequently the service is excellent and every guest should feel completely relaxed here.
The Victoria Park Plaza is just next door and is a very modern 4 star hotel with lovely airy public areas and is well worth considering.
The Guoman Grosvenor has just been refurbished consequently, just like the Guoman Charing Cross in the West End, it is another lovely place to stay.
The Thistle Westminster is also just round the corner from the Apollo Victoria Theatre and it is a great hotel if you are watching the pennies and the prices of the Grosvenor or Rubens seem a bit daunting. You can also get good deals at the Hesperia and Grange Rochester Hotels which are nearby.
Lastly the City Inn Westminster is worth a mention when coming toWicked, but don’t get lulled into the thought that you can walk between hotel and theatre – you can but it is further than you think!
If you don’t mind a short tube journey look at the hotels in Kensington and Knightsbridge too – a little further out they can offer considerable savings over theatreland hotels.
I got my tickets for Wicked the Musical from theatrebreaks.co.uk
I've never considered myself as much of a 'theatre buff' but so many people had told me how brilliant Wicked was that I thought I just had to go and see it.
I find that usually things that get such an amazing hype around them turn out not to be as good as expected as you expect far too much and sometimes they don't deliver.
That was most definitely NOT the case with Wicked. The whole thing was absolutely amazing. The actors and actresses were fantastic and the props and costumes were just wonderful.
I would recommend this musical to anyone. Even people who don't normally go out of there way to see musicals, you will not be dissapointed!
Booking a Theatre break in London with a hotel combined is also a really lovely present for a loved one (especially since Valentine's Day is coming up).
‘Wicked’, directed by Joe Mantello, is based on the back-story of Glinda, the good witch, and her malevolent green-faced rival, the Wicked Witch of the West, Elphaba.
As soon as we entered the theatre we were greeted to a scene of green, immediately exemplifying the dominant theme of the play. This is the second time I’ve seen ‘Wicked’; the previous time I sat in the Dress Circle, however this time I sat in the Stalls. I would definitely recommend the Stalls as it made me feel more involved in the production and sitting closer was a benefit as you could see the characters facial expressions to the greatest extent.
Rachel tucker, who played Elphaba, gave me goose bumps every time she reached a high note in her vocals. Her beautiful voice and her expressive body language reflected every emotion, such as love and anger, which her character felt.
Glinda, played by Louise Dearman, was incredibly effective at conveying the humour that her part required, especially in the tense moments. She clearly displayed her versatility as an actor in the song ‘Defying Gravity’ by showing her compassion toward Elphaba, a side of her which the audience did not often see.
Overall, I found the musical production brilliant. It left the audience in tears of both laughter and sadness and I would highly recommend it to everyone, particularly to those who enjoy musicals.
I've seen the show before and really enjoyed it but this time I sat in the stalls..didn't realise I how amazing the stage and affects are …I went with no expectation so really got to hear all the words etc…a brilliant show …good family show ..would definately go again .....
IF THERE WERE 100 STARS ON THE RATING I'D TICK ALL OF THEM!
Wicked is amazing, you go in thinking you know OZ but when you leave you've got a total different outlook, especially for the wicked witch of the west, Kerry Ellis has amazing vocals and will always be my favourite Elphaba.
I've seen this show a lot now and for some reason I felt a little disappointed. Kerry Ellis was as always on great form, but Dianne Pickleton was not as I've seen her before and neither was Oliver Tompsett, I wonder if these guys have been in it too long now and are tired by their roles. Desmond Barrett as the Wizard was good with delivering his lines with his booming voice unfortunatly vocally I think he struggles with his songs. The only other person who delivered for me was Harriot Thorpe as Madame Morrible, this was the most evil and sinister performance with the exaggeration of hands and swooping her material of her gowns back, they were just little things she did that made the character watch. Andy Mace was as good and professional as always however I think he's held back as Dr Dillomond, why can't he just be the Wizard instead? I think in general the show has come to a point where it's just become tired and needs a new boost because at the moment everyone seems to be relying on Kerry's success and powerful voice to do the show for them.
Wicked is a really enjoyable and fantastic story where not only does good triumph over evil, but reveals that evil is just misunderstood!
A really fun and engaging show in a fabulous theatre that is a spectacle in its own right.
A great night out that couples, families or groups of friends can enjoy and remember for a long time after.
Located right in the centre of Victoria amongst loads of hotels and restaurants, this is a great choice for someone looking for a big show that leaves you with a happy feeling when you go home

Dear Heloise
My two friends and I have just returned from our theatre break to see Wicked, staying at the Grosvenor Victoria.
We had a great time. We were very impressed with the hotel, which had old style charm and didn’t appear ‘corporate’ in any way. Also our seats were excellent too at the theatre for an enjoyable show. My friends thought the whole package was such good value, they said they will look on your website when they next want a trip.
Thank you for your hotel recommendation, and assistance with our ‘break’.
Please give my regards to Simon… and his Dad
Regards
Jane Smith
